Take a few moments to read the installation section of this ReadMe. Doing so will help you avoid problems installing PageMaker 5.0.

1. INSTALLATION, START UP, AND MEMORY
1.1 Installation
Before installing, restart your Macintosh with Extensions (System 7) or Startup documents and Control Panel documents (System 6) off to avoid possible installation problems. You may particularly encounter installation problems if you have these extensions on your system: MountImage, BeHierarchic, SuperBoomerang, EasyAccess and Escapade.
You will need 13MB of hard disk space if you choose only the “Aldus PageMaker 5.0” option in the Installer, not 6MB as written in the PageMaker Disks and Installation Guide and PageMaker 5.0 Getting Started. See the Guide or Getting Started for additional installation information.
1.2 Installer History Notations: Unfound Filters (Error -43)
At the bottom of your Aldus Installer History file, you may see notations stating that certain filters could not be renamed or deleted from your hard drive. These notations will be followed by a “-43.” If you didn’t receive an error dialog box during installation, this will not affect PageMaker’s installation or running the application. The Aldus Installer/Utility is looking for out of date filters (from PageMaker 4.x) that may need to be removed or renamed. The out of date filters are: WordPerfect PC 5.0/5.1 imp.flt, WriteNow Import.flt, and WriteNow Export.flt.
1.3 Filter Not Removed By Installer
The “WordPerfect PC 5.0 Import.flt” installed with PageMaker 4.0 is not removed by the Aldus Installer/Utility. This is not to be confused with either the “WordPerfect PC 5.0/5.1 imp.flt” or “WordPerfect PC 5.x imp.flt” filters. If present, the Installer will replace the former with the latter.
1.4 Installing Dictionaries
If you install PageMaker 5.0 on a machine on which you currently have 4.2 installed, and if the 4.2 user dictionary has been modified and is in the US English folder, the Installer changes the 4.2 user dictionary name from “AldEng.udc” to “AldUSN.udc.” Both PageMaker 4.2 and 5.0 will be able to use this dictionary.
If you install PageMaker 5.0 on a machine on which you currently have 4.x installed, the Installer changes the 4.x user dictionary name from “AldEng.udc” to “Old.AldEng.udc” and will also install “AldUSN.udc,” the 5.0 user dictionary. If you then open or create a 4.x publication and attempt to use the user dictionary (e.g., check spelling or hyphenation), 4.x cannot recognize the 5.0 dictionary, nor find the “Old.AldEng.udc.” To use the dictionary in 4.x, rename the “Old.AldEng.udc” to “AldEng.udc.” (PageMaker looks in alphabetical order for the first user dictionary available.) To access your 4.x user dictionary in 5.0, open the Dictionary Editor, and save as “AldUSN.udc” to replace the newly installed 5.0 “AldUSN.udc.”
1.5 Avoiding Memory alerts
In low-memory situations, PageMaker will display “Low memory” or “Out of memory” alerts. In these cases, you may need to increase PageMaker's allocated memory: Save and close all publications, quit PageMaker, and then open fewer documents and/or increase allocated memory using the “Get info” dialog box in the Finder. Although the default memory allocation is 2750K, PageMaker is more efficient with a greater partition of between 3000 and 6000K (or more when needed). Allocating more memory to PageMaker will reduce low memory alerts and increase performance of certain operations, such as high-resolution display of TIFFs. If you use a lot of Additions such as “Build Booklet…,” “Sort Pages…,” and “Printer Styles…,” “Open Template…,” you’ll want to raise your partition.
1.6 PageMaker launch and Symantec AntiVirus
If you have a Symantec AntiVirus (SAM) 3.5.6 or previous versions active, PageMaker 5.0’s launch time will be significantly slower. SAM has the same effect on other applications. To improve PageMaker 5.0 launch time, you can turn SAM off from its Control Panel. Newer versions of SAM may solve this problem.
1.7 PageMaker 5.0 Network Copy Detection
Network Copy Detection (NCD) is new in PageMaker 5.0. NCD detects whether multiple copies of PageMaker are running at the same time and enables PageMaker to determine if the number of copies running exceeds the amount licensed.
Each manufactured disk set of PageMaker has a unique identification number that identifies it on a network. This number is displayed when you choose “About PageMaker…” from the Apple menu in PageMaker. When a copy of PageMaker is launched, its network identification number is broadcast over the network. If another copy with the same network identification number is launched, the user is prompted to save their work and required to exit PageMaker immediately. They can restart PageMaker as soon as the other users quit the identical copies.
NCD is also active when working in PageMaker. Refer to the Network Install file on Disk 1 for more information.
To increase the number of PageMaker users at a site, you have can:
•Obtain a single-user or ten-user license package from your dealer.
•Purchase and install another retail version of PageMaker.
While PageMaker may be installed on more than one Macintosh, only the one copy can be run at a time. To allow a single copy of PageMaker to be installed on multiple machines, and allow concurrent use of those copies, you can use a software management package such as KeyServer by Sassafras Software.
KeyServer is an application that, when loaded onto a networked Macintosh, monitors the launching of any applications that have been configured by KeyServer and allows only a certain number of users to launch an application at once. Also available from Sassafras is KeyServer Light, which checks only a single network zone.
SoftLibrarian 2.0.4 is not compatible with PageMaker 5.0; Jeddak is currently working on a solution for this software management package.
NCD works transparently to the user (unless it detects a problem). It scans large networks while searching for simultaneous use, thereby minimizing any performance impact. Aldus wants to make it easier for network and large-scale use of multiple copies of PageMaker and to provide a copy detection scheme that will be convenient for our customers who use PageMaker in accordance with the license agreement.
2. PRINTED DOCUMENTATION CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS
2.1 PageMaker 5.0 User Guide
Page 179 shows different ways for importing Microsoft Word tables. In addition to these methods, you can also insert a hidden “t” (by selecting the letter, choosing “Character…” from the “Format” menu and checking “Hidden” in the “Style” box) directly before the table. PageMaker will then import the table as tabular text.
Page 189 states that to import a spreadsheet as a graphic, you must use either OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) or Publish/Subscribe. In fact, you can also paste a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as a PICT by selecting it in Excel, pressing Shift, and choosing “Copy Picture” from the Edit menu.
Page 258 states that you cannot edit EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file colors other than by converting spot to process. In fact, you can edit the values of imported EPS spot colors, as described on page 157 of the User Manual.
Page 302 incorrectly states that you can set overprinting for only one object at a time with the “Fill and line...” command. The overprinting attribute can be applied to multiple selected objects.
Page 305 states that PageMaker follows a font name in the “Font” menu with a question mark if the font is used in your publication, but isn’t installed on your system. Instead, you will actually see a substitute font in brackets beside the missing font. If no substitute is chosen in the “Font matching” dialog box, the PANOSE default font appears.
Page 332 states that, if PageMaker cannot locate the filter that a graphics file requires to be printed, an asterisk (*) appears next to the file type in the “Kind” column in Windows version of PageMaker only. In fact, the asterisk is used to indicate this in both Windows and Macintosh versions of PageMaker.
Pages 362-363 refer to the “Auto include images under” option in the “Other preferences…” dialog box. The option has been renamed to “Alert when storing graphics over.” Also, the word “Maximum” was added to the option that controls the size of internal bitmaps.
2.2 PageMaker 5.0 Getting Started
Page 3 states that the minimum Apple System file requirement for PageMaker 5.0 is version 6.0x; the minimum version is actually 6.0.7. Also, this section states that the Mac II is the minimum hardware configuration for PageMaker 5.0; in fact, anything with a 68020 or higher processor can run PageMaker 5.0 if it has sufficient RAM, hard drive space, etc. So PageMaker 5.0 will also operate on a Classic II, Color Classic, any LC, and any Powerbook except Model 100.
Page 13, describing differences in PageMaker 5.0’s and previous versions’ tracking, incorrectly names the file where tracking information is kept. The sentence should read, “…if you would like to retain the tracking values specified in PageMaker 4.0, replace the PageMaker 5.0 Tracking Values file installed in the Aldus folder with the Kern Tracks file located on your PageMaker 4.0 or 4.2 disks.” Then you should rename the Kern Tracks file to Tracking Values so PageMaker 5.0 will recognize it.
Page 70 contains a misleading illustration: in Step 5, the text block rotates about its center, but does not rotate in the way the illustration's arrow suggests. (Tip: Before dragging counter clock-wise as described in Step 5, move the starburst cursor to the right side of the text block for better control.)
2.3 Aldus Additions for PageMaker 5.0
Page 1 identifies the Aldus CompuServe forum name as SBSALD. The actual name of the forum is ALDUSFORUM.
Page 15 states that a sample library opens if an existing library is not found. Instead, if no library exists or if the previous library cannot be found, the “New library” dialog box appears.
Page 26 states that the “Create keyline...” Addition accepts increments as small as a hundredths of a point. The actual increment is one-tenth of a point. Use of trapping techniques with this Addition is described in online Help.
Page 30 states that the “Printer styles...” Addition does not alter “Print” dialog box settings in a publication. Your settings can change, however, in one case: if an active publication is printed with the “Printer styles...” Addition, its print settings are set to those of the printer style assigned to it during the last “Printer styles...” print session. To make sure the publication’s current print settings are not reset by the Addition, save the publication before printing it with “Printer styles...,” click “No” when prompted to save the changes to the publication after printing with the “Printer styles...” Addition. Page 30 also states that the “Default” style in the “Printer styles...” Addition prints with current PageMaker print settings. This feature has changed so that the “Default” style uses the settings you’ve defined for it.
2.4 Script Language Guide
Page 137 of the Script Language Guide incorrectly states that for parameter “nFirstPage” you enter the value “all” to print all pages in the publication. Instead of “all” you should enter the value “allpages.”
3. TEXT, COMPOSITION, AND PUBLICATION CONVERSION
3.1 Composition after conversion
Some of the improvements to text composition in PageMaker 5.0 may cause changes in composition when PageMaker 4.x publications are opened in PageMaker 5.0. If this is common in your publication, we suggest you use the tracking values specified in the previous version by temporarily replacing the PageMaker 5.0 “Tracking values” file installed in the Aldus folder with the “Kern Tracks” file located on your PageMaker 4.0 or 4.2 disks. See the second paragraph of section 2.2 for additional information.
If you find unwanted line breaks after conversion, or if no track was used on the affected text, use the text tool to highlight the text that composed a single line in PageMaker 4.x, select “Type specs...” from the Type menu, click “No break,” and then click “OK.” This ensures the selected text is set on a single line (and these words will no longer hyphenate). Repeat for each occurrence of a changed line break, beginning with the earliest occurrence in a single story.
When you convert a long publication, recomposition occurs as each page is turned until the publication is saved in PageMaker 5.0. Use the “Story info...” Addition to recompose the entire publication before saving.
3.2 Undocumented Control palette feature
An enhancement to the Control palette in Character or Paragraph view allows you to press Return after typing a new value in the Control palette to return to the to the layout or story editor window and to press Shift + Return to stay in the Control palette, but display the changes in the layout or story window.
The keyboard shortcut Command + ` does not open the Control palette if the desk accessory “Curlers” is installed. “Curlers” uses this same shortcut, which overrides the PageMaker command. Deactivate Curlers if you need to use this shortcut.
The RasterOps video card uses the Command + ` shortcut for zooming, and will also override the PageMaker Control palette command. You can change the video card's keyboard shortcut in the “Monitors” Control Panel.
If you use PageMaker 5.0 on a RasterOps large screen monitor, the monitor’s default zoom and pan rate keys will conflict with PageMaker’s Control palette's power nudge and switch focus functions; the monitor commands will override these PageMaker Control palette commands.
If you have an Asian language System 7.1 installed, PageMaker’s “Arbitrary zoom” command (Command + spacebar) conflicts with the system's command for changing keyboard inputs. Use Shift + Command + spacebar, or Shift + Command + Option + spacebar to zoom instead.
3.3 Hyphenation
Hyphenation points for a word are not used in its initial text block if the word is replaced in the user dictionary, and thus a word may not correctly hyphenate. Place the text cursor in the word, add a space and then delete it, and the hyphenation point is accepted.
3.4 Proximity Dictionaries
If you’re using the Dictionary Editor to access and change user dictionaries you should first close PageMaker.
3.5 Text wrap with images
When you paste an image graphic with text wrap on it, the text block may not automatically recompose. If this occurs, do a forced recompose (see online Help in the “Power” section of “Shortcuts”) or move the image slightly on the page.
4. FONTS
4.1 Font substitution
The PANOSE font matching feature uses a “PANOSE Preferences” file that, if deleted, restores the PANOSE pre-set defaults. Under System 7, the “PANOSE Preferences” file is stored in the Preferences folder within the System Folder.
After a PANOSE font substitution, recompose your stories to ensure the correct font metrics are applied. To recompose, press Option + Shift and choose “Hyphenation...” from the Type menu.
If you have Adobe Type Reunion installed, fonts substituted by PANOSE are not alphabetized nor grouped in type families on the Font menus. Press the Shift key while selecting the font menu and the list will be alphabetized.
4.2 Font matching
When you import a document with missing fonts from an application that specifies fonts by number instead of name, PANOSE will list the font as “Macintosh Font xxx” in the “Matching results” dialog box. The font also appears in PageMaker’s font menus with the substituted name.
If you edit the font matching exceptions table (by clicking the “Exceptions...” button in the “Font matching” dialog box available when you choose “Preferences...” from the File menu), the changes are not applied to the active publication. You must reopen the publication for the new exceptions to be applied.
5. GRAPHICS
5.1 Undocumented features
You can now press Shift when switching from the rotation tool back to the pointer tool, which will leave the currently selected objects selected.
You can now rotate single or multiple objects around the center point of the selection's bounding box by pressing Command as you move the rotation tool.
5.2 Image display quality and PageMaker’s performance
For better performance when cropping or otherwise modifying large images, raise the memory partition or use the “Preferences...” command to increase the “Maximum size of internal bitmap” value before importing the images, and set the display resolution to “Normal.” The maximum value for “Maximum internal bitmap size” is 1024K.
The “Maximum size of internal bitmap” setting affects the “Normal” resolution display quality of imported or relinked TIFF images, placed vector graphics (a file containing different types of graphic information), and bitmap graphics pasted from the Clipboard as well as publication size.
5.3 Text wrap with large objects
Avoid using polygonal text wrap on objects larger than 23 inches, as the surrounding text may not compose correctly around objects of this size.
6. PRINTING
6.1 Printing options
You can press the “Reset” button in any of the “Print” dialog boxes to restore initial settings in that dialog box. To reset all the “Print” dialog boxes to the settings they had when you chose “Print...,” press the Option key and click the “Reset” button.
“Include downloadable fonts” is now checked by default in the “Print” and “Printer Styles” dialog boxes. If you deselect this option and are missing a font, downloadable fonts will most likely print using printer's default font (e.g., Courier).
In previous versions of PageMaker, “Manual” tiling would print any objects that appeared on the screen—whether or not the objects were actually on the publication page—to fill the paper size and orientation selected in the “Print” dialog box. This allowed users to print a “reader’s spread” of a double-sided, facing pages document.
In PageMaker 5.0, only objects on the selected page will print, rather than all objects on screen. However, you can create a “reader’s spread” using the “Build booklet...” Addition by selecting the “2-up consecutive” layout option and printing on large paper.
When “Millimeters” is selected as the measurement system in “Preferences,” the paper size dimensions shown in the “Print Paper” dialog box may not match the dimensions shown in the “Page setup” dialog box. The “Print” dialog box uses page size information from the PPD file, and some PPD files define paper sizes to the nearest whole point, rather than a decimal value. When these are converted to millimeters, the size differs slightly from the exact paper dimension.
If you use a PostScript Level 2 PPD file to print to a PostScript Level 1 printer, PageMaker can only print multiple copies of the publication if “Collate” is checked in the “Print document” dialog box.
6.2 Compatibility
When printing a grayscale TIFF image from PageMaker to an AGFA imagesetter, the image prints darker than expected. Gray percentages of 1 to 50 percent print 1.5 to 2 times original density. Grays over 50 percent print as black. Until a permanent solution becomes available (possibly a RIP update), this effect can be avoided as follows:
1. Use the “Update PPD” addition to produce an “include file” for your AGFA imagesetter (highly recommended for configurable printers anyway).
2. Add the following line to the “Include” file, exactly as it appears here:
*JobPatchFile 0: “/ALPS where {pop ALPS begin /colorexists false def end}if”
When you use Type 3 fonts, the Apple LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver will fail and PageMaker may crash downloading the fonts. To avoid this, download Type 3 fonts manually or don’t use them. Apple and Adobe are expected to release an updated driver in the near future to resolve this problem.
The Apple LaserWriter Select 310 is a PostScript printer, but uses a modified version of the LaserWriter 7.0 printer driver. You will experience extremely lengthy print times when printing on this type of printer.
System 6.0.7’s Print Monitor generates an error message when used with PageMaker 5.0 and the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver, and your publication will not print. To fix this, install the Print Monitor 7.0.1, which is found in the Utilities folder in the folder named Aldus located in the System folder.
You will not be able to print if you are using a U.S. version of PageMaker on a non-U.S. system. The non-U.S. versions of System 7.1 are not compatible with the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver that PageMaker uses. If you are using a non-U.S. system, be sure you have the corresponding version of PageMaker installed.
Because PageMaker 5.0 is optimized for print performance, it takes several moments to interrupt screen savers. Also, your screen may not be updated immediately if the file you are printing or saving to disk is large.
If you are using System 7.0 and you print your publication with “Background Printing” turned on, when you set the file to print later and then restart your Macintosh, your publication will not be printed.
